Flickr

This is a test post from flickr, a fancy photo sharing thing.

RSS

I signed up for the RSS Feed. It seemed easy enough to do and I believe I've done it correctly. I checked off categories that interest me like animals, the environment, and science, to name a few. Then I checked off sources (like CNN) that I was interested in getting informational news from. Some of the sources were automatically checked already. I assume this was as a result of the interest choices I checked off in the interest column. I'm intrigued by the idea that I will be getting virtually my own newspaper.

New Technology

New York City metro hospitals are launching a pilot program that provides patients with "smart card" which can hold the equivalent of 30 pages of medical records. You just carry it with you and if you are hospitalized--there are your medical records--no confusion, especially if you are unconscious!

Back on Flickr

I went back on Flickr and explored a travel section; read some postings from a traveler in Cabo San Lucas. This info could be helpful when planning a trip to a new destination. What was more interesting is being able to plan your trip with Trip Planner and then incorporate the photos you took on your trip. I also liked Create a Masterpiece and the program that allows you to save old photographs by converting them to dvd. It does seem a bit pricey.

Flickr

It seemed easy enough to post photos and to start a group. I started one called Friends on the Trail. I also sent some pictures to Maurice, Irmgarde and Annette. Probably pictures they don't want to see since they were of frogs, toads, and snakes. I have seen all of these on the hiking trails I travel. I had to use photographs I found on the web because I don't own a digital camera. I can see how this technology might be a perfect way to share photos of family with family or friends. I might have to invest in a digital camera for Christmas. I started to explore the mashups and made a trading card.

New Information

Now I have discovered by working with Cathy that anyone can post a comment to my blog. Does the invitation only have to do with people you want to be part of your blog--the invitation only folks can create original posts on my blog as if they were part of my blog? If that's the case I have to revoke my invitations!

Registration of Blog & Invites

Well, I've registered my blog and I've invited three people to view it and add comments if they wish. That's about all the time I have for today.

Attempt to write a learning contract

My attempt to write a learning contract for myself was thwarted by technology. Every time I clicked on the attachment it flashed quickly and never materialized. Sooo I will have to write one without the help of the Learning Library template; however, I pretty much remember what the visual said so I think I can handle it without one.
Here is my contract: I intend to finish all 26 learning things. I intend to make a path toward my goal by doing one a week. I intend to ask Patty, Lara, Irene and Cathy for help when I need it. I will need an ipod and a digital camera at some point in the learning process and I don't intend to spend my own money buying either sooo I will have to borrow one from the system?!!!
I have a computer at work. The main obstacle in my way to reaching my goal is TIME! Will Harford County Public Library give me enough time to learn these new tasks? We will see.

Of the seven learning things. I think the easiest thing is setting a goal. The hardest thing for me is using all the technology that might help me to reach it because I either 1. don't know how to use the technology. 2. I don't have time to learn it. 3. prefer a more tactile style of operating 4. I'm not a sedentary person so don't really like to spend hours in front of a computer. Those are the things that prevent me from becoming a techno wizard. Ha! However, I am a lifelong learner. Who isn't?! Anyone who is curious and observant, anyone who has to adapt to change which basically encompasses anyone who wants to survive in this world is a lifelong learner. We all have preferences in regard to what we like to learn. Preferences may differ from those things that life requires us to learn; therefore it would follow that the motives for learning vary.

First Challenge

I have mastered the first challenge by creating a blog.
